Lighting, one of the most important aspects of portrait photography
During portrait photography, a professional photographer will take control on the lighting composition, for the subjects referred. The photographer will then adjust the intensity and direction of the lighting accordingly. There are many lighting plans that can be used to light a subject's face.
The most basic lighting that is used in portrait photography is Three Point Lighting. In the Three Point Lighting, three lights are used to fully mold the subject. The fully molding will be bringing out the effects and details of three dimensionality. One of the light plan that is used for portrait photography is the Key Light. Key Light is known for other name of main light. The Key Light will be positioned to a side of a subject's face. Normally, the range will be between 30 to 60 degrees. The Key Light will be the brightest light among all the lighting plans.
The second light plan that is used for portrait photography is the Fill Light. The Fill Light concept is opposite of Key Light. Fill Light will soften the shadows that are being produced on the opposite side of a subject's face. Fill Light will normally follow the natural light. This natural light will be created when a subject is placed in room which is near to a window. The third light plan of portrait photography is Back Light. Back Light is also known as hair light or rim light. The Back Light is normally positioned behind a subject, which is outside the picture frame. The Back Light will provide background separation which will highlights a subject's hair and shoulders. The Back Light should not be bright like the Key Light. It should just be bright enough to separate the background. The Back Light will be set just off to the side, to allow a shadowed detail of a subject's face.
